Black Holes: from Speculations to Observations
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper provides a brief review of the history of our understanding and knowledge of black holes. Starting with early speculations on “dark stars” I discuss the Schwarzschild "black hole" solution to Einstein’s field equations and the development of its interpretation from "physically meaningless" to describing the perhaps most exotic and yet "most perfect" macroscopic object in the universe. I describe different astrophysical black hole populations and discuss some of their observational evidence. Finally I close by speculating about future observations of black holes with the new generation of gravitational wave detectors. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS This paper summarizes a talk presented at the Albert Einstein Century International Conference, held in Paris, France, in July 2005 to mark the centennial of Einstein’s "miracle" year 1905. Strictly speaking, black holes are a consequence of another Einstein miracle that did not occur in 1905 and still had to wait ten years, namely general relativity. With his theory of special relativity, however, Einstein had laid the ground work already in 1905 for his theory of general relativity. And even more strictly speaking, speculations on black holes predate even the special theory of relativity by over a century.

A String Model of Black Hole Microstates
The statistical mechanics of black holes arbitrarily far from extremality is modeled by a gas of weakly interacting strings. As an effective low energy description of black holes the model provides a number of highly non-trivial consistency checks and predictions. Speculations on a fundamental origin of the model suggest surprising simplifications in non-perturbative string theory, even in the ...
متن کاملSome Speculations about Black Hole Entropy in String Theory
The classical Bekenstein entropy of a black hole is argued to arise from configurations of strings with ends which are frozen on the horizon. Quantum corrections to this entropy are probably finite unlike the case in quantum field theory. Finally it is speculated that all black holes are single string states. The level density of strings is of the right order of magnitude to reproduce the Beken...

In [1] some connections were made between string theoretic models of black holes and certain issues in arithmetic. One of the more speculative suggestions in [1] was a proposal that the entropy of BPS black holes is related to an arithmetic height of certain arithmetic varieties. In the present note we remark on some connections between these speculations and some issues related to the Riemann ...
متن کاملGravitational Radiation from Intermediate-Mass Black Holes
Recent X-ray observations of galaxies with ROSAT, ASCA, and Chandra have revealed numerous bright off-center point sources which, if isotropic emitters, are likely to be intermediate-mass black holes, with M ∼ 102−4 M⊙. The origin of these objects is under debate, but observations suggest that a significant number of them currently reside in young high-density stellar clusters. There is also gr...

A number of attempts have recently been made to extend the conjectured S duality of Yang Mills theory to gravity. Central to these speculations has been the belief that electrically and magnetically charged black holes, the solitons of quantum gravity, have identical quantum properties. This is not obvious, because although duality is a symmetry of the classical equations of motion, it changes ...
